Calls Current Allocation System Outdated, Backs Ongoing Review Process
The Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has renewed calls for a more realistic and democratic revenue sharing formula to address growing developmental challenges at the state and local government levels.
Gov Fintiri. made the call on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission at Government House, Yola.
He stressed that the current revenue allocation system no longer reflects present-day realities, noting that state governments now bear increasing responsibilities in key sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security.
According to the governor, a comprehensive review of the formula is long overdue, urging the commission to recommend a fairer structure that will strengthen subnational governments and enhance service delivery across the country.
Gov Fintiri. emphasized that empowering states and local governments would significantly reduce pressure on the federal government, allowing for more efficient governance and development.
He also expressed strong support for the ongoing review process, assuring the delegation of Adamawa State’s full cooperation to ensure the exercise produces meaningful and impactful outcomes.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Federal Commissioner representing Kwara State, Mohammed Ismail, said the visit was part of a nationwide exercise aimed at verifying and updating data used in revenue allocation among the three tiers of government.
He explained that the exercise, backed by constitutional provisions, seeks to align the revenue sharing formula with current socio-economic realities, including population growth, infrastructure expansion, and emerging national challenges.
Ismail noted that the commission has made significant progress in the review process and is currently validating critical data that will guide the development of a revised allocation formula.
He commended the Adamawa State Government for its cooperation and praised the visible infrastructural development recorded across the state.
The commissioner added that the outcome of the exercise would have far-reaching implications for the federation, assuring that the commission remains committed to carrying out its mandate with professionalism, transparency, and integrity.
